The climate is changing. The earth is warming up, and there is now overwhelming scientific consensus that it is happening, and human-induced. With global warming on the increase and species and their habitats on the decrease, chances for ecosystems to adapt naturally are diminishing. Many are agreed that climate change may be one of the greatest threats facing the planet. Recent years show increasing temperatures in various regions, and/or increasing extremities in weather patterns.

NUS focuses on enhancing the environment span from refining sustainable energy and water sources to the reduction of pollutants and recovery of energy from waste. Expertise include developing novel photovoltaic cells in solar energy , hydrogen storage in fuel cells and utilisation of marine algae in biofuel . Specialised centres also focus on improving air quality and improving energy efficiency in environments and products. Research in water has strengths in membrane technology and works closely with the government. Wind energy is also a research area which NUS is actively engaged in and is partnering a major Danish company, Vestas in wind power research.
